Kanchipuram Weaving Tradition

Kanchi Pattu Sarees (Kanjivaram Silk Sarees)

Kanchi pattu — also known as Kanjivaram — is the broad silk-weaving tradition prized for heavy interlocked zari borders and contrast pallus, making it a first choice for bridal and wedding sarees. Ramanji Handlooms now weaves this tradition in Dharmavaram too, across five distinct weave styles: self brocade vintage, butta, brocade, kuttu border and 2 gram gold zari.

Good to Know

What Are Kanchi Pattu (Kanjivaram) Sarees?

Kanchi pattu, or Kanjivaram, sarees are silk sarees woven in the Kanchipuram style, where the border and body are often woven separately and interlocked, giving the border a crisp colour break and considerable durability — a favourite for weddings and bridal wear.

The Interlocked Border

In the traditional korvai technique the border is woven separately and joined to the body on the loom. This is what allows a strong contrast border without the colours bleeding into each other.

Woven in Dharmavaram Too

While Kanchipuram remains the tradition’s home, Ramanji Handlooms now hand-weaves it in Dharmavaram as well, across five weave styles — self brocade vintage, butta, brocade, kuttu border and 2 gram gold zari — each with its own character but sharing the same heavy, wedding-ready zari work.

Weight and Occasion

Kanchi pattu sarees run heavier than everyday silks because of the zari density, which is exactly why they are chosen for weddings, receptions and other bridal occasions.
