Traditional Border Technique

Handloom Kuttu Sarees

Handloom kuttu sarees are woven using the traditional kuttu joining technique, where the border is attached to the body directly on the loom.

Good to Know

What Is a Kuttu Saree?

A kuttu saree is a handloom silk saree in which the border is joined to the body using the traditional kuttu (interlocking) technique on the loom, rather than being woven as one continuous piece. This gives a clean, durable colour break between border and body.

How Kuttu Weaving Works

Two sets of warp threads, one for the body and one for the border, are interlocked by hand as the saree is woven. It is slower work than a single continuous weave, and it is what allows a strong contrast border that will not separate with wear.

How to Recognise It

Look at the join between border and body: on a kuttu saree the transition is crisp and holds its shape, and the reverse face shows the same clean join rather than loose floating threads.
